Do they have ranch in the UK? The answer is yes, they do. In fact you can buy ranch dressing in many UK supermarkets. As an interesting quote: there and salad fast food (Tossed) chain that has ranch dressing in its menu
But, What´s ranch? If you don’t know, let’s talk to you about it!
Ranch dressing is a dressing made with buttermilk or sour cream, mayonnaise, green onions, garlic powder, and other seasonings blended into a sauce. Ranch dressing has been the best-selling salad dressing in the United States since 1992, when it outsold Italian dressing. It’s equally popular as a dipping sauce. According to a 2017 survey, it’s the favorite sauce of 40% of Americans.
How was it born?
In 1954, Steve and Gayle Henson opened the Hidden Valley Ranch, a tourist ranch near Santa Barbara, California. There, guests were served a rub that Steve had learned in Alaska. The rub soon became very popular and began to be sold in bottles; later a factory was opened to manufacture ranch dressing to mix with mayonnaise and buttermilk. In 1972, the brand was acquired by Clorox for $8 million. The Clorox company reformulated the dressing composition several times to make it easier to prepare. The first change was the inclusion of buttermilk flavoring to mix the condiment with milk instead of buttermilk.
the sauce already finished in bottle, is still one of the most popular dressings for Americans to enjoy as a dip to dip fried onion rings, chicken wings, crudités… to dress salads or to enrich tacos, hamburgers…
What are the condiments that compose it? The truth is that isn’t known with certainty, there is talk of mayonnaise, butter, sour cream or buttermilk, garlic, onion, black pepper, and there are also those who add chives, parsley, dill, mustard and paprika. In any case, it’s a sauce that has been replicated in many homes and today there are as many variations as there are cooks who make ranch dressing.
Recipe for traditional ranch dressing
This traditional ranch or American sauce is a classic. It’s perfect for dressing green salads, but you can also serve it with baked or chips potatoes.
We love it in dips with vegetable sticks (celery, carrots, radishes…) and as a salad dressing, but try it with crackers or chips.
- 250 ml buttermilk
- 25 ml Lemon juice
- 125 ml mayonnaise
- 125 ml of cooking liquid cream (or 1 plain yogurt if you like it more acidic)
- Salt and ground black pepper
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
How to prepare
To make the buttermilk, heat 300 ml of milk in the microwave for 1 minute or a little less (it should not boil, just warm up a little). We take it out and add the lemon. Stir and let it stand.
After 10 or 15 minutes we will see that it appears as cut and we can use it (for this recipe we use it as it is, without straining it or anything).
Mix well with the rest of the ingredients and let stand cold until ready to serve.
One of the current trends is to lighten the fat content of this sauce, as we read here, two tablespoons of Ranch dressing provide 145 kcal. and about 15 gr of fat (94% of calories come from fat), so it is common to prepare it with low-fat cheese or yogurt instead of mayonnaise or sour cream, so what you get is basically a yogurt sauce, something very common in the kitchens of the East or Europe, for example.
Now you know that you can find ranch dressing in the UK, but in case you can’t find it you can prepare it yourself.
